The cell was transfected with DNA encoding 2 different proteins. The first protein is a Red Fluorescent Protein (RFP) that is expressed throughout the cell (both the nucleus and the cytoplasm). The second is a transmembrane protein that is expressed at the cell surface. This second protein contains Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) on it''s intracellular side, and it is this which gives the green outline.
