Your Code, Your Impact: Open Source and Software Licensing in Research
How to choose the right license for research software: open source, commercial paths, and real cases from CRG

This seminar explores how research software can move from the lab to real-world impact through the right licensing strategy. Using the CRG experience as a case study, the session will explain Open Source, Academic Non-Commercial and Commercial licensing options, and how research organisations can balance Open Science with technology transfer and innovation.
At CRG, software is not only a research output but also a driver of innovation. The session will highlight how the CRG Technology & Business Development Office (TBDO) supports researchers in making strategic decisions about software protection, dissemination and commercialization, ensuring alignment with institutional policies, funder requirements and impact goals.
Designed for researchers, research software engineers and innovation professionals, the talk will address practical questions such as how to deal with third-party code, how copyleft works in practice, and how to make licensing decisions that enable both scientific collaboration and real-world application.
This session is part of Barcelona Health Innovation Week, a city-wide initiative showcasing the strength and impact of the life sciences and healthcare innovation ecosystem in Catalonia.
